Air America is spreading lies about Hillary Clinton

I've been listening to Randi Rhodes on Air America for a long time.  Her show is entertaining and Randi has usually had a solid command of the facts -- she likes to brag about how well-informed she is, and until recently that was reflected in her rhetoric. Which is why I have no choice now but to conclude that over the last several weeks she has been intentionally misleading her listeners with a barrage of lies and absurd speculation.

Randi finally admitted last Friday that she's supporting Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination, something that had become obvious recently to even casual listeners, despite her frequent claims of neutrality. That's fine. It's her show and her perogative to support a candidate. But it's not okay for her to lie and mislead her listeners in order to bring down a Democratic candidate. Randi Rhodes is damaging her own reputation and damaging Air America.

Here are a few things that Randi Rhodes has said about Hillary Clinton in the past couple of weeks:

Hillary Clinton broke a "pledge" to remove her name from the Michigan ballot.

Hillary Clinton campaigned in Florida prior to the state's primary.

Hillary Clinton is responsible for the "Obama is a Muslim" email that has been circulating.

Hillary Clinton is "not exactly a Democrat".

Hillary Clinton intends to run as an independent candidate in the general election.

I only hear Randi Rhodes for about 45 minutes each evening during my drive home from work, so I have no idea if this is a comprehensive list. But even if there's nothing else, it's enough to characterize Rhodes as the Rush Limbaugh of the Left.

Her comment about Hillary Clinton campaigning in Florida was made at least twice. Perhaps she was confusing the two candidates:

Barack Obama hinted during a Tampa fundraiser Sunday that if he's the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, he'll seat a Florida delegation at the party's national convention, despite national party sanctions prohibiting it.

Obama also appeared to violate a pledge he and the other leading candidates took by holding a brief news conference outside the fundraiser. That was less than a day after the pledge took effect Saturday, and Obama is the first Democratic presidential candidate to visit Florida since then.

Obama and others have pledged not to campaign in Florida until the Jan. 29 primary except for fundraising, which is what he was doing in Tampa.

And, of course, there was also Obama's ad campaign:

The Obama campaign today began airing paid television advertisements in a national cable buy that include advertising in the state of Florida. There is no question that these ads are a clear and blatant violation of the early-state pledge that Senator Obama and the other leading Democratic candidates signed last year.

Among the list of prohibited activities are "electronic advertising that reaches a significant percentage of the voters in the aforementioned state." (According to Nielsen, there are 6,6 million TV households in Florida that receive CNN through either local cable systems or satellite dishes. This represents 92% of all Florida TV households.) The Obama campaign knows this, but has chosen to violate the pledge regardless.

Is Randi Rhodes that misinformed on this issue?

And what about her accusation that Hillary had broken a pledge to take her name off the ballot in Michigan? There was no pledge and no DNC requirement. Where is Randi getting this stuff?

Just last Friday, Randi told her listeners that she could no longer stay quiet about the tactics of the Clinton campaign and included in her litany of complaints the "Obama is a Muslim" email. Does Randi have any evidence that the Clinton campaign had anything to do with that email? If not, it was beyond irresponsible for her to make that charge.

Also last week, a caller complained to Randi that Hillary is behaving like a Republican. Randi's response? "Well, she's not exactly a Democrat." That just stupid. But it's gotten worse.

Today, Randi stated that she really believes that Hillary plans to run as an independent in the general election. And Randi couldn't leave it as speculation. "She will pull a Lieberman. She will run as an independent." This is just absurd. It's nothing more than a smear. And then Randi took it one step further, leaving no doubt that she has imbibed the Obama kool-aid. Randi Rhodes believes that faced with the [imaginary] prospect of Hillary running as an independent, that Obama may take her offer to be the VP (even if he's guaranteed the nomination), rather than risk splitting the Democratic vote and handing the White House to McCain. Yes, St. Barack will sacrifice his own presidential prospects and give up the nomination to stop the Monster Hillary's great conspiracy. Simply insane.

It's really time for somebody at Air America to give Randi Rhodes a reality check. If she's lying, she needs to stop. If she's just extremely misinformed, she needs to spend some time educating herself before going on the radio and misleading her listeners. Enough is enough.

No, I'm just pointing out a noticeable tendency amongst certain Clinton supporters to brush aside the facts, brush aside their ability to be objective and to have clarity, to brush aside everything that they see and hear that they don't like and call it lies.  A vast conspiracy.  Whatever you want to call it.

It's sort of cultish.

Re: Radicals (none / 0)

Exactly...

So what if Obama had a press conference outside of a fundraiser? That was a very long time before the primary, and Clinton had a "just-stepped-off-the-plane" press conference the day before the primary.

Has Randi ever stayed quiet about her inane Obama boosterism?

I wish they would just give her her last paycheck.

Re: Air America is spreading (none / 0)

Randi Rhodes is the worst of the bunch.

She has been viciously & emotionally assaulting clinton on Air every single day.

Several callers called & ask her point blank.

" Are you so Pro-Obama because you're Black & he happens to be Black"

She is a  total grace.

She is just as racist as whites who dislike Obama. There is no difference.

Lionel Simmons & Hartman have remained neutral.

But Rhodes has used her air time bitching!

She is a light skinned African-American.

Once in a while she introduces herself to listeners about her military service. Always never fails to mention that she is a proud Black woman.

She gets her share of men who call the show & compliment her as a beatiful black woman.

Air America needs an intervention... (2.00 / 3)

Randi is crazy mad. I don't know what it is with these semi-smart people when they lose their knock on reality. Maybe it is that she has spent so much energy promoting a lie. Now, it is all about her. She can't back down because... it is all about her. The entire Air America contingent seems to be infected with the same syndrome. What do you do when you discover your Emperor has no cloths on. I feel sorry for Randi.

I feel even more sorry for Rhodes Scholar Rachel Maddow, she is in one deep pickle...

Who is the most to blame for our civil war! (none / 0)

As hard as it is to admit, I can no longer listen to Air America, especially Randi Rhodes.  You can put them right up there with all the so called progressive blogs like DKos, Americablog and so many others.  You can no longer reason with any of the Obama supporters without getting your butt chewed out, and I am frankly tired of it all already with how many months left until the GE.

The Democratic party will be ruined for many years after this election, and I am a life long democrat. My oh my, how happy the Republican Party must be with the civil war that has erupted in the biggest way in the Democratic party these days.  It does not look good, and how did this all occur in such a short period of time.

I for one have had it!  Oprah, I hope you are happy now!  You helped destroy our hopes and dreams for a better party and presidential hopes after so many horrible years under W.

Re: Who is the most to blame for our civil war! (none / 0)

You do realize that the subtext of your post is, "Everything was going along swimimmingly with the coronation of our candidate until these insolents showed up."

I do gotta point out the disconnect that people are blaming Obama for this civil war, given the fact that his message has been about unity, getting past slice and dice politics, and getting past the red-blue state divide.

This is the guy that people claim is not tough enough, though.  How does that work???

AND YET, responsibility for this mess is being placed on the shoulders of Obama, despite the Clintons' history of engaging in these kind of hardball, at-any-cost politics.

It just doesn't add up.

Re: Who is the most to blame for our civil war! (none / 0)

If you want to know my true beliefs, I was a John Edwards supporter in a big way and contributed as much money as I could afford to his effort.  After he dropped, I was leaning to Obama.  However, the final change for me was when I read in The Nation that he is going to continue to use private contractors in Iraq like Blackwater.  He also refuses to add his name to any legislation to ban their use in the war.  This group is Bush`s shadow army we are talking about.  Clinton has co-sponsored the bill to ban their use!

This article opened my eyes to Obama`s facade!

Re: Who is the most to blame for our civil war! (none / 0)

Very interesting article.  I don't think that's enough to swing one's support of a candidate (even though I agree it's a HUGE issue) but it's definitely intriguing.

However, I can't but help read into Clinton's bill as being politically motivated.  Her campaign refuses repeated requests for an interview and then presents her bill the day after the article is placed online?

Even the author noted this in the forward, calling it "interesting" timing.

And that's my problem with Hillary.  It seems like everything she has done in the past 7 years has been aimed at her Presidential run.

For someone who is so high profile and so smart, I can't think of a single time she truly stood up to the Republicans or Bush.

Please feel free to enlighten me.

Re: Air America is spreading lies about Hillary Cl (none / 0)

If you want to say that someone on Air America said some mean and unfair things about Hillary Clinton, I'll believe you, though you haven't provide any links or quotes. I'll believe you, I'll denounce and reject -- I won't even bring up the diaries and comments on this site that are infinitely worse than what you describe.

I'll just say this: as Keith Olbermann observed tonight, Clinton is running as if Obama were the democratic candidate and she were the Republican; race-baiting, fearmongering, every variety of swiftboating. She is running as the Republican in the race. That has benefits -- her support among no-college whites and people over 65 is stronger than ever. Ferraro Democrats, who think the problem of racism in this country is that of racism against white women, and black men are unfairly advantages -- they will flock to her.

But there are also negatives to running as the Republican, and one of them is that liberal talk radio and the netroots are going to say mean, partisan things about you. It's a shame we're unfair to our political and ideological foes. But that's the reality, and if you act like a Republican, you have to expect true-blue democrats to treat you like one.

by EMTP democrat on Wed Mar 12, 2008 at 11:38:02 PM EST

Obama is the one ATTACKING (none / 0)

the Clinton Presidency and praising Ronald Reagan.  His campaign is the one that has called progressives racists and said nothing about the actual racists in the Republican Party and Republican talk radio.

It's okay by me and many other Democrats, Republicans and Independents for Hillary Clinton to realize that this election is truly also about the fact that we have been attacked on American soil, 3,000 people are dead and firefighters who worked at Ground Zero are still dying to this day, and we want a President with more than 3 years of accomplishment in public life.

There has to be an acknowledgment of that, and the answer that his one speech shows he knows what to do will never be enough for me and millions of other people.  It's okay for a Presidential hopeful to mention reality.  I want to know that they understand it and take it seriously.

So get your facts straight-- Hillary Clinton was fighting George W. Bush when Obama decided that Bill Clinton was worse.  That's how we've been getting divided.

Obama continues to divide the Democratic Party.  Hillary offers a way forward AGAIN-- being running mates either way-- and Obama calls it an "okey dokey."

Well, you want to divide this Party and use your media whores to whip up your own frenzy, fine.  You're preaching to yourselves because Obama's negatives are going up the more people see the way he's willing to call everyone in his own party who doesn't support him a racist.

And what a laugh for a bunch of white liberal men (and Maddow) to cry about someone else's suffering from racism.  Only the choir watches Olbermann--a white liberal man talking about racism as he behaves in a deplorable way towards Hillary Clinton.

Obama went to the most elite private schools in the entire world from Hawaii to Harvard, he's a friend of billionaire Oprah Winfrey, and a celebrity in his own right with a Grammy and 2 best selling books that--just like any celebrity--are only about him.  Can we talk about people with real problems in this world?  Give me a break.

Sources for the assertion Obama attacked the Clinton presidency? Or praised Regan?

I know you have to repeat the meme that Obama is attack Clinton, to cover her attacks on him, but out here in the reality-based community those lies don't get any traction.

Rhodes has always been a little loose with the facts, and frankly quite nutty. Something has always bugged me about her. There's some kind of entertainment value I suppose, but not sure I ever got it. Give me Rachel Meadow or Thom Hartman. Rhodes can take a hike.

My take on AAR (none / 0)

I listen less now, since some host have taken sides and have become like some of the O kids on Dkos. I do not care if they have taken sides in the Democratic race but geeez can they try and be as neutral as possible while on the air?

My local AAR station

Thom Hartmann is GREAT! I would never miss him! He is most likely leaning towards O, but he does his best to try and sound neutral.

Stepanie Miller I still like, Ed Schultz I still like but both of them have become rabid and are no longer even trying to stay or sound neutral.

Maddow is closer to being like Thom Hartmann but not nearly as good at covering her leanings.

Mike Malloy (sp?) is like an ocean wave, sometimes OK other times ... not OK.

Most of the others have gone or almost gone the way of Rhandi Rhodes.

I am so broken hearted these days listening to Randi... and I listen every day. I have been a huge fan of hers. I even had a chance to sit down with her last fall and we had a wonderful and genuine conversation. I love her.

But she is going scorch the earth Pro-Obama without an ounce of fairness, and it is getting worse everyday. Today she was telling people that Hillary was going to go the Lieberman route and run as an independent just so John McCain would win and Hillary can run again in 2012.

And her telling people that Hillary's Iowa campaign started the Obama email is outrageous. I got that email in January 2006 and it was immediately followed by a "Hillary is a murderer" email.

Are you serious!!!?

I've been listening to Stephanie Miller's "I'm just saying" Hillary bashing for months but I never expected a real genius like Randi to go so over the edge.

It is people like her that encouraged people to vote for Nader in 2000.

Here Randi. Put down the kool-aid, take this blue pill and we'll reconvene in a few minutes.

I just wish we could focus on the real threat... McCain and everyone else that has the -R after their name.

Hoping to catch a listener call her out on her obvious pro-Obama, anti-Hillary bias. Today, she was accusing Hillary of playing the race card. The other day she said Obama won Texas despite Hillary winning the popular vote and the caucus system being totally screwed up over there. She rants about how Hillary is a bad Democrat because she refuses to step down and let the Party crown the chosen one. I used to have some level of respect for this person, but she has her agenda and she's pushing it, the truth be damned. Has she ever been critical of Obama?
